The Mottainai Nº1 is made out of natural buffalo horn, hand-made in Germany. We are talking, one by one, piece by piece, hand finished and hand-numbered.
Each pair of glasses comes with high quality Hoya, gold-mirrored lenses.
Packaged in a wooden box that has been fully plated with black buffalo horn and gold engravings.
To have as little waste as possible, we decided to create a ‘press-papier’ (paper weight) out of the left over materials. Each press-papier is engraved with gold, along with the fabrication number. Included is a small golden sac with the surplus of the production process, which may be used to nurture the soil, allowing new life to grow. Read more
The Mottainai Story is told on gold ink that has been printed on black paper and is bound together with an open-spine technique. A collection of black Mottainai postcards, are included to share with friends, or to keep.
In order to retrieve the finest qualities of colour, grain and thickness, the buffalo horn is selected in a delicate yet rigorous process. The horn is sanded down to thin pieces, reassembled in six layers (for front facing pieces) and three layers (around the temples) in order to ensure strength and durability. The front-face is built up in two colours to create the iconic Mottainai Bridge.
The inside is gold engraved with the style name, the product number and the inscription ‘In momento – In icftu oculi’, meaning: “In this moment, in the blink of an eye.”
